PASSIGNANO SUL TRASIMENO

The town is situated on a steep promontory which drops towards the lake, protected by a ring of green hills covered with vines and olive groves.

The Castle was fought over on account of its strategically important position controlling the road to Perugia and the north and the present-day Fortress clearly shows the phases of its construction, with its surviving stretches of the curtain wall, with gates and towers (notably the 14th century triangular Ponente (West) Tower.

Of particular note is the simple baptismal church ofthe patron saint, St. Christopher; mentioned in a charter of Federico I in 1163, but of much older (10/11th century) foundation.
lt has three naves with columns and semi-columns typical ofthe High Middle Ages.
The interior has preserved a good deal of its decoration, comprising a group of ex voto figures of saints, frescoed on to the walls in the first half of the 15th century.
These are an interesting record ofthe rural society ofthe time, as well as the development of the tastes and style of the late Gothic period into the Renaissance style of Benedetto Bonfigli.
It is to one of his followers that the painting of Sts Clement and Catherine (1446) is attributed. On one column is a fragment of a painting of the 13th century bishop.
In the sacristy is a small collection of archaeological finds from Roman tombs and the necropolis, excavated in the area of the cemetery.

Leaving the town, the visitor comes across the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Oliveto, built in 1582-86, probably to the design of Mariotto Radi of Cortona. The sanctuary contains paintings by Salvio Savini (second half of the 16th century), and a miraculous Madonna and Child from the School of Bartolomeo Caporali, housed in a valuable sandstone altarpiece.

In the medieval village of Castel Rigone is the Sanctuary of the Madonna of the Miracles, one of the masterpieces of the Umbrian Renaissance.
The building was constructed in 1494 with contributions from the Municipality of Perugia for protection from the plague.
It was dedicated to Holy Mary of the Miracles at the wish of Pope Alexander VI.
Built entirely of sandstone, it is the work of an unknown architect who was inspired by the Madonna del Calcinaio in Cortona, a work by Francesco and Giorgio Martini.
There is a doorway with rich candelabras and lunettes, decorated with a Madonna with Child and Saints Augustin and Bartholomew, in the well-balanced facade. The interior contains works of the 15/16th century Umbrian and Tuscan Schools.
