TUORO SUL TRASIMENO

The town is situated in a panoramic position on the slopes of Monte Castelluccio, dominating the narrow plain enclosed within an amphitheatre on the north shore of Lake Trasimeno.

Tuoro has its place in history due to the famous Battle of Trasimeno in 217 BC, when Hannibal destroyed the army of the Roman consul Caius Flaminius.
Never before had the Roman army suffered such a devastating defeat.
To get a clearer idea of the event, the visitor can visit the "Permanent Documentation Centre" and the "Historical and Archaeological Tour of the Battle Site".

At Punta Navaccia, in an area of great natural interest, is the fascinating open-air museum, the "Campo del Sole" (Field of the Sun), a collection of sculptures in sandstone from local quarries by great contemporary artists of several nationalities.

Isola Maggiore also comes under the jurisdiction of Tuoro.
lts name is linked with Francis of Assisi, who arrived here on a stormy night in 1211.
lts only inhabited centre still preserves the appearance of the 15th century village built by fishermen, with its fascinating tradition of lrish Stitch Lace, a tradition which the ladies of the island have kept alive to this day.
Lace-making is deeply-rooted on the island, and there is a special museum devoted to the craft.

Also on the island are the Baptismal church of St. Michael the Archangel, dating back to the 11th century, a veritable gallery of Umbrian painting from the 12th to the 14th century, the Church of San Salvatore and the 19th century Guglielmi Villa, built on the site of a monastery of the Franciscan Friars Minor, founded in 1328.
