Administratively, the Trasimeno area is part of Umbria, but culturally and geographically it straddles both Umbria and Tuscany.

It contains features of both, being an area where the border between the two regions is intriguingly blurred, in language and landscape as well as in the flavours of its cuisine and its traditions.

It is in the exact centre of Italy, at a point which since ancient times has been the meeting point of routes for travellers from Central Italy and Northern Europe heading for Rome. It is an area which is easily accessible but at the same time secluded, and this has always made it a very desirable goal.

It is not a busy transit area, however, but the kind of place that people stumble upon by chance, then visit regularly. There is no needfor you to stumble upon it, though, which is why we recommend these easy access routes.

If you are coming by car, take the A1 Autostrada del Sole and leave it at the Chiusi-Chianciano Terme exit. Follow the signs for about twenty kilometres and you are there. If you prefer travelling by rail, take the Florence-Rome line to Terontola, Chiusi, or Castiglione del Lago.

Once you have found your accommodation in one of the eight municipalities which make up the Trasimeno area (Castiglione del Lago, Città della Pieve, Magione, Paciano, Panicale, Passignano, Piegaro and Tuoro), you can start planning some easy trips.

Within a radius of a hundred kilometres or so you will find 20% of the world's artistic heritage: Florence, Perugia, Sienna, Arezzo, Assisi, Orvieto, Gubbio, Spoleto, Chiusi, Cortona, Tarquinia ... and so on.

So you have within your grasp the greater part of Italian Renaissance art, as well as a considerable amount of the art of ancient and medieval times.
In barely two hours you can be in the centre of Rome.
All the roads makefor easy driving and often have wonderful panoramic views.
